The Allman Brothers Band , who are best known for their southern rock style, were formed out of Jacksonville, Florida in 1969. Band Members are brothers Duane and Greg Allman, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, Dickey Betts and Jai Johanson. Duane and Greg started a band together called The Allman Joys in 1963, and started out their tours in the South East. They split up after a third LP was rejected by their music company, Liberty Records, and for a time went their separate ways.
After the brothers went their separate ways, Duane worked at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, playing his Gibson guitar. He quickly gave up this work and put together a new band. Trucks and Oakley were both longtime friends of Allman and quickly hooked up. Dickey Betts, a musician that Oakley had jammed with before, also joined. Johanson joined the band, and ultimately Gregg Allman agreed to join in on the band with his brother. Their self-titled album was released in 1969.
