The National Standards for Music Education were established by the Music Educator’s National Conference, or MENC, which is now known as the National Association for Music Education. The association is one of the largest institutions in the world that are involved in promoting and teaching music. The standards set by the institute are aimed at helping music students gain in-depth music knowledge and skills, which include singing and playing different instruments, both alone and with a group. Also, students are encouraged to practice creative improvisation of melodies, create different variations, compose and arrange music, analyze and describe music, evaluate performances, and understand other arts in relation to music and history. The standards differ for various groups depending on the age.
Grades K-4
Music education for students in grades K-4 is more inclined towards performance, and the students are trained to respond well towards singing, moving with music, and working with different instruments. The standards set for grades K-4 are based on five categories.
