Sony Electronics' latest professional DAT recorder, the PCMM1, combines consumer-friendly features with the added professional requirements of today's increasingly demanding DAT user.
"For the past decade, digital audio tape has provided professional musicians and consumer alike with the ability to create studio-quality recording-in a studio, garage, or conference room," said Paul Foschino, marketing manager of professional audio products for Sony Electronics' Business and Professional Group. "With the PCMM1, now an even broader audience of professional users can take advantage of these same benefits."
The PCMM1 allows for selectable ID6 (Serial Copy Management System) and features a recording margin indicator, which allows users to monitor peak levels during recording. The unit's improved microphone circuitry uses the same microphone amplifier as Sony's SBM1 Super Bit Mapping adapter. The SBM1, a common accessory to many Sony professional DAT machines, features a built-in 20-bit converter for higher-quality recording and digital I/O capability for both optical and coaxial.
With a compact mecha-deck that is 20% smaller and 25% lighter than its consumer cousin, the TCDD8, the PCMM1 allows for 3.5 hours of recording time through its supplied Ni-MH batteries. By using alkaline batteries, users can achieve 2.5 hours of recording time. The PCMM1 features 3 adjustable recording levels (automatic, mic limiter, and manual) and 2 automatic gain system (AGC) modes (music or speech) for higher-quality recording. The automatic volume limiter system electronically reduces sudden peaks in music and helps to eliminate distortion at extreme volume levels. AGC automatically adjusts recording levels to help prevent distortion.
