Manufacturer Support:
Well, never having needed their support, it's impossible to say... and not fair to require a number value, by the way, Same Day.
Value:
Wish it was cheaper (as with everything), but a great value for its worth.
The Wow Factor:
The wow factor is in what it is capable of doing FOR your music.
Overall:
With only one week of experience with this Aphex Exciter, I am already able to see how much use it will get by including it in my project studio! It will take some getting used to before I can consider myself an authority on how well it works, but it does what it is designed to do very, very well.
I have little first-hand experience with the Aphex, but know of its legendary reputation and have seen its effectiveness on past projects (using the original Aural Exciter). I also know what at least one other exciter-like device is like, having owned at least one hardware and software version of another product.
This Aphex Exciter is deceptively deep in spite of what appear to be a very straight forward set of controls. Don’t be fooled by the simple concept presented by its purpose as a processor. It is incredibly easy to over do the application of this device. The slightest change to a control or two can result in a very great change in perception of the sound once you’ve dialed in a basic foundation.
The richness of detail, depth and clarity I’ve been able to dial in to a current multi-band recording project in less than a week of fiddling is truly stunning! I can hardly wait until the day comes that I no longer think of it as something unique and fascinating, because by then it will just make sense to use it all the time.
The original Exciter that I remember and similar units I have used had a much more simple set of controls, the expectation being that one just “dialed in” the correct amount of processing and DONE! In a way, I wish this were that simple, but I’m actually glad it’s not so.
There is only a thing or two I wish were designed into this unit… 1- I wish there was an option to link the two separate channels together since it is typically used on stereo mixes (although I love that the two channels are completely independent as well). This includes linking the channel bypass switches when desired. The switches are set in a depression in the face panel, right in the middle of the unit and a little bit of a hassle to switch when not racked, or racked low. 2- It would really be nice if the center setting of the controls were marked with values, as are the low and top end. I say this mostly because the visual center setting does not necessarily correspond to the control’s sweep range. The Exciter Freq control having a range of between 600Hz and 5kHz, yet the manual declares the 12 o’clock position to be roughly 3kHz… hardly the middle between 600 and 5k. Small complaints, to be sure.
I’ve read that the switches are not the most durable and that bothers me a bit. Here’s hoping they outlast all expectations! I think I’m going to be really happy I made this purchase…. Speaking of… Same Day delivered quickly, on time and in perfect condition!
