"CAD E100S Experience"

Sound:

Amazingly quiet mic (3.7db) Great for vocals, acoustic guitars, guitar amps. Very clean, clear and uncluttered by edgy artifacts found in today's condenser mics.

Feature:

Integrated shock mount is cool. It doesn't get in the way of positioning.

Ease of Use:

This is a no EQ mic. Virtually no color. No sibilance. Very easy to record this mic with just positioning. Requires 48v phantom power. Not a problem in most project studios.

Quality:

The mic is a very well built unit, but I gave this particular mic a low score here because of factory quality control. When I got the mic, I plugged it in, turned it on and thought, "what an expensive hunk of junk". It sounded terrible. Thin and harsh. I wrestled with the idea of returning it but I don't really like to do that. So, I just set it aside for awhile. Then, I decided to open the mic just to see if there was an obvious problem. There was! The ground connection between the circuit board and the case had not been made. The ground is made by removing some of the paint from the case at the circuit board mounting point, whereby allowing the circuit board to rest it's grounding area on the raw metal of the case. This paint removal was not done completely. It worked just well enough make sound, but sounded horrible. I carefully made the connection but scraping away some paint, put it back together and Ta-Da! Amazing! This means that the QC checks do not include a basic response test before the mics go out the door. Something that I can do with free software and a semi-decent speaker in my livingroom.

Manufacturer Support:

CAD gets the bottom score for support. I alerted both Sales and Support both to the issue that I had with the mic over 3 weeks ago and have still not heard a word back. If I had heard from them, I probably wouldn't be telling the world about CAD's horrible QC.

Value:

I think the street price is a little high compared to other items in it's class, but it is made in the USA and not in China, so it is to be expected.

The Wow Factor:

Great mic. Does a great job.

Overall:

This is a unique type of mic with it's extremely tight pattern. I would search for another mic, but not to replace it. Only to compliment its amazing capabilities.
