"Elegant looks, lots of bang for the buck"

This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.

    Feature:
It has the basic features I need. The Grover tuners are nice. The pickups seem fine, though some may choose to upgrade them. I have no plans to do this at this time, however.

    Quality:
I'm a new owner, so view my comments in that context, but so far so good. Its ebony finish is flawless. (It's made in China, so hopefully the finish will stand up over the long run.) Everything seemed tight, so I have no complaints there. The factory setup wasn't the greatest, though I really wasn't expecting much in that regard. I pulled it out of the box, tuned it all up with the electronic tuner, hit the first chord and it was...simply awful. I quickly realized that everything was fretting sharp. I pulled out the little manual they send with it and saw that I could easily adjust the saddle positions to, in effect, lengthen or shorten the strings individually. Using the electronic tuner again, I hit the harmonic on the 12th fret to check for tune and then fretted on the 12th fret to compare. Using a screwdriver I then gradually moved the saddle away from the nut and kept checking and rechecking as I brought the sharpness down. It took me 30 minutes to get all the strings adjusted, as the adjustment distance was substantial on most strings and I was trying to go at it very conservatively. But once finished, the intonation was good--and the guitar suddenly sounded good to match. The manual mentions that this operation may need to be done when changing string gauges. All this is old hat for Les Paul owners, I'm sure, but it was new to me, so I mention it for others who may not be aware of this and incorrectly assume something is terribly wrong should theirs arrive in a similar state. The action on mine was fine the way it came, but it can easily be adjusted as well with a couple of screws on the bridge.

    Value:
While it's certainly possible to get something better, this is a tremendous product at this price level. Even if one choses to do some upgrades, it would still be way cheaper than buying a typical Gibson Les Paul at quadruple the price or more. You're getting a bargain because it's an Epiphone, but it's still a Les Paul model.

    Desirability:
With its simple elegance, ebony and white contrast, and classic lines it looks fantastic.

    Sound:
Great sounding guitar--especially at this price. I wanted something to complement my Fender Telecaster Deluxe, which I bought new back in 1974. I'm using this Epiphone Les Paul for home recording.

    Ease of Use:
This is an easy guitar to play. The action can be adjusted if need be.

    Overall:
As a new owner, I can only speculate as to its longevity, but I expect to use it for several years at least. It seems solid at this point.

    "A HAPPY CONVERT"

    Feature:
Typical Les Paul features (so far - so good!).

    Quality:
So far, there seems to be better craftsmanship in the actual guitar than even the current Gibsons I've looked at. I think the grover tuners must be a recent improvement. My guitar seems to stay in tune pretty well.

    Value:
I am more than happy with the price. In fact, within 2 weeks of buying my first Epiphone LP Standard (cherry sunburst), I bought a second one (ebony)! The second guitar was sold as a factory second (only some minor cosmetic things that you really have to look hard to see - still better than the Gibsons I bought in the 70s!).

    Desirability:
I have it (2 of them)!

    Sound:
As a former owner of several GIBSON Les Pauls (starting with a new 1969 re-issue goldtop - I really wish I hadn't sold that one!), a 1972 Deluxe that had absolutely horrible pickups (and the maple deck had a 1" long split in it), a 1974 white Custom ( the wood must have been green or the router they used to cut the holes for the electronics must have been dull or broken the wood was literally "chewed" in those areas plus, the finish "shattered" after about a month - actually broke out around the bridge posts the pickups stunk on this instrument), a 1977 Custom (the fingerboard lifted up (came unglued) on this one, and the pickups were a disappointment, 1978 Standard (weak pickups - poor tone, the body was made of various blocks of wood glued together - looked like a jigsaw puzzle and formed into the shape of a Les Paul body). I am not abusive to my guitars! By 1978 I had sold ALL of those guitars. In the 80's I bought an Ibanez RD 440 Roadstar that kept me going until I quit playing 9 years ago. I started playing again last month and I wanted something that would give me a Les Paul sound without paying $2000.00 +. After my string of bad experiences with Gibsons I was a true skeptic. Anyway... after buying my EPIPHONE Les Paul Standard I took it home, plugged it in and was totally blown away with the sound and the feel of this guitar! I am a die hard fan of the original FLEETWOOD MAC (the Peter Green era) and I'm able to get some of those sounds with this guitar (unlike the Gibsons I formerly owned) I also like the Yardbirds and Mike Bloomfield (some of those sounds have come out of this guitar). I haven't played out with this guitar yet, but the pickups have the exact sound I've been looking for!

    Support:
    I don't know, I haven't had any problems yet.

    Overall:
Unless Gibson changes the quality control, I'm staying with Epiphone. Since these guitars are sold at a reasonable price, I may buy yet another factory second or refurb. and change out the pickups.

    "BAD AXE"

    Feature:
My guitar came with grover tuners which allow the guitar to stay in tune much better than with the older epiphone les pauls. After I set up the guitar to my liking I was jamming for hours in disbeleif of the sound quality of this inexpensive guitar.

    Quality:
Well built, great finish, great tuners. awesome sound, road worthy. For the price I paid it cant be beat.

    Desirability:
Jet black with off white body & neck binding, pearl inlays, this thing looks as wicked as it sounds.

    Sound:
I've played alot of guitars in my time looking for (the sound)I own a mexican strat which is awesome. The epiphone les paul is the only other guitar I will need for any style music I play. This guitar has BALLS!! I play all types of music, for country i'll stick with the strat for all out rockin i'll reach for the paul.

    Support:
Have had no problems to date.

    Overall:
I'll own this guitar a long time, been wanting one for years. Between a strat and a paul why would I need anything else. the epiphone to me sounds as good as any american made edition with les paul trademark sustain, growl, and bite.

    "Great looks. Great sound. Cheap."

    Quality:
I dont think I will ever wear out this guitar.

    Value:
I bought this guitar used, with a hardcase. Both in "mint condition", for half the price of a new one. Unless i break it, I can sell it at any time, and not lose money..!

    Desirability:
Most guitarists I know say: "But I`d rather have a Gibson...!" I say: "Why?"...I`ve played a Gibson Standard, then switched over to this, and unless you have to much money. it`s not worth it. The difference is to small.

    Sound:
Sounds like a badass with distortion, and like an angel in clean "mode"!

    Ease of Use:
The only problem with this guitar is that the G-string gets out of tune quite fast, when bending a lot!

    Support:
Never had any problems, so don`t know what the support is like.

    Overall:
I will never sell this guitar. I will never change the pickups. It looks and sounds just the way I want it to! Love it!

"An excellent guitar at beautiful low price"

    Feature:
This guitar didn't come with any accessories other than the standard literature/warranty card etc. But who needs extra when you're already getting a fantastic buy for the money? Seriously, this is "THE BEST" deal around. I think the choice of wood and materials really make this as close to the Gibson Les Paul as you will find: Mahagony body/neck with a rosewood fingerboard etc.

    Quality:
Well, I was surprised to find out that this guitar was made in China. At least that was what the sticker said. Tell you truthfully guys, don't let that sway you. There were 3 Epiphone les paul standards that I tried and all sounded and played great. My final choice was based on color - I got the burst! =D

    Value:
My choice boiled down to the Gibson Les Paul Studio or the Epiphone Les Paul Elite. I came across the Epiphone Les Paul Standard for almost half the price of either guitar mentioned above - AND - it sounded great. In fact, it puts the Studio to shame when it comes to tonality and sustain.

    Desirability:
Les Pauls are chick magnets what else can I say.

    Sound:
This guitar sounds incredible and for less than half the price of a Gibson Les Paul. 3 switch/2 tone/volume knobs let you get a great range ... from clean or funky to hot blues or hard rock, nice warm thick/fat sound - awesome sustain, great harmonics throughoutt he neck.

    Ease of Use:
Guys I do own a Gibson Les Paul Custom and it doesn't get any better than that. However, this guitar is a close second in playability and sound for incredibly less money. The feel in your hands tells you right away that you are playing a beautiful instrument. The only "wish" was that it had a bit "more" crank to it's pickups - not that the pickups are bad - they just could use a little more "burst" to em.

    Support:
Sorry, I've never had to deal with them at all but I put down an 8 to give the benefit of the doubt.

    Overall:
This one is going to be with me along with my Gibson Les Paul custom until the day I die.

"The Ebony Epiphone "Les Paul Standard"...Black, Beautiful & BAD ASS!!!"

    Feature:
The Les Paul is simple & easy to use. I got the hard case, which is A MUST!! Four knobs & one pickup switch are fine and work well. The workmanship is BEAUTIFUL...it's an Epiphone, and even if made in China, "Epi" is still watching & producing a fine instrument. The Ebony "Standard" is a work of art & plays just as well. Buy this axe!!

    Quality:
This is an Epiphone "Les Paul", & their quality speaks for itself!! I own an Epi. PR-150 Acoustic which for $99.00 is unbelievable! This Epi is equally impressive. I take good care of my guitars & this one will last a lifetime...you get your moneys' worth here!! You'll love the look & finish...it's a Les Paul!!! BUY IT NOW!!

    Value:
This is a great value, especially when the Gibson sells for almost 4 times as much. Come on now!!!!!! Epiphone is incredible value!!

    Desirability:
If you play guitar, YOU NEED A LES PAUL!!!!! It has the look, feel & sound you want & you'll covet this thing like the sweet mistress that she is!!! She's damn SEXY & can be a MEAN MOTHER when you pull her tail!!!!!!!!

    Sound:
The sounds from this guitar are amazing...the HUGE natural SUSTAIN produces incredible harmonics with just the lightest strum or pick action. I own a Texas Powerhouse Strat & this Les Paul fills the plate perfectly. It's a chunky, thicker sound than the strat. Great for hard rock & it solos easier than the strat with the wider fretboard. AWESOME SOUNDS on the Rythm pickup!! Bridge pickup great for solos!! Playing through a Marshall MG-30DFX amp. this Paul WAILS!!! Great on crunchy rythyms & big over-drive solos & MAJOR POWER CHORDS!!!

    Support:

    "Look no further!"

    Feature:
Beautiful glossy Orange Sunburst finish just like Jimmy Page used to play with Zeppelin!

    Quality:
When I was in college I had a '75 Gibson Les Paul - Tobacco Sunburst. Other guitarists would always compliment me on how sweet it played. Truth to tell, I think I even like the Epiphone as much or better than that Les Paul. It's made exactly to Gibson standards, they just put in cheaper pick-ups and tuners. I have not ever had a problem with mine staying in tune, though, and I am very picky about that. The nut that goes around the pickup jack always comes loose, but that ain't no thing for a guitar this sweet. I can't imagine paying $2,000 for a new Gibson when you can get the same guitar and add new pickups for $160 and have a better finished product. I love this guitar.

    Value:
    This scores a 20 on a scale of 10!

    Desirability:
    It looks great. Beautiful guitar.

    Sound:
Replace the factory humbuckers with Duncans and you will have better than Gibson sound.

    Support:
No probs with the axe, so have not called support.

"After playing guitar for 4 serious years, this guitar made me feel like a true guitarist!"

    Desirability:
    Very sexy looking!

    Overall:
Man, people who think this guitar isn't a 10 are very picky! I've been playing guitar for over 4 years and have a lot of experience. I have always used a Fender Strat as my main guitar. I had no problems with it and loved it. I gpt this guitar because I needed a second good guitar, intead of the cheap crappy ones I usually get. I was blown away by the way this sounds compared to anything I had played previosly. It sound so rich and full, epecially when played clean. This guitar made me feel like a real guitarist, before I felt like I just played the guitar...now I feel like there is much more of a connection between me and my instrument. I would sujest those of you who are thinking of getting a cheap guitar to invest a little more for this baby, you won't be dissapointed. I sure wasn't! O...and don't forget to name it!
