"Best pre-amp for under $500."
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
I own a M-audio Profire 2626, and I have always been happy with the Oktane preamps on it. As I have evolved as a (amateur) producer and an artist, I wanted more color or character than the clean Oktanes provided. After a lot of research, I decided on the GAP Pre73. I couldn't be happier. On vocals and bass (all I have used it on so far) it adds that Neve magic I'd so hoped it would. Warm, full, and able to be overdriven if you really want color.
Feature:
A great single channel pre. Fantastic DI, 48V phantom power, and a Low Z switch. This is a simple unit, but excellent.
Ease of Use:
2 Dials, what could be easier.
Quality:
This thing is a tank. Unassuming gear without a ton of lights and bells, but I've had a few people ask "Whats THAT?".
Manufacturer Support:
This works so well, I haven't needed any help or support at all.
Value:
I'm actually shocked that this is only $300. If you're looking for a great mic pre or a DI, you could get one of these just for character, even if you already owned other pre's (assuming they weren't Neve 1073s).
The Wow Factor:
If I had a friend who had this, and I didn't - I'd be jealous. All the sexy is in the sound, not the box.
Overall:
An AMAZING piece of gear. If it was stolen, I'd hunt down and kill the thief, reclaim my Pre73, then harvest the thief's organs and use the money for a second one.
