Gretsch CTJ484 Catalina Limited Reserve 4-Piece Classic Bop Drum Shell Kit Customer Review

Sound:

Overall, not bad for the price. However, I have two nit to pick: 1) The 12 inch tom mount is mediocre, with the steel curved band only engaging 2 lugs. Gretsch then allows the drum to rest on a rubber bumper that fits up against the shell. So, the drum is not actually "supended". This dampens the shell a lot, and reduces much of the sustain (the whole reason for using such a "rims mount" in the first place). 2) I find the floor tom VERY hard to tune cleanly, without getting a lot of nasty overtones. That seems to be the norm with mahogany shelled drums in general. On the PLUS side: A great kick drum, and the lugs are decent quality. However, if I had it to do over, and wanted a small jazz kit, I'd go with the Sonor Jungle kit, hands down (and, it is an all maple kit).
