"A modern-day classic"
Feature:
Two humbuckers, a selector switch, two volume and two tone knobs, AND an excellent Bigsby-style tremolo. The reviewer in "Guitar Player" disliked the position of the selector switch (between the pickguard and volume knob), but I find the positioning perfect as I have yet to accidentally hit the switch as can often happen with Les Paul-style switch positioning. The two volume and two tone knobs allow for an infinite variety of blended tones, and the hybrid floating roller/tune-o-matic bridge is a great addition to the tremolo--excellent tuning stability.
Quality:
What can I say? The fit and finish are flawless. Pearloid inlays, full neck, body and f-hole binding--all without any gaps or glue. The frets are well-set and finished with no rough edges. A solid, well-made guitar that seems made to last for decades. Absolutely dependable for use on the road. This guitar compares favorably to guitars in the $1,500+ range.
Value:
This product is at least worth DOUBLE the price. Plays better than an Epiphone Riviera.
Desirability:
S-E-X-Y. The only cosmetic change I would make is to change the speed knobs to Gretsch or Telecaster-style knobs.
Sound:
The guitar is very responsive to touch dynamics. It excells in producing full, rounded jazz tones, but is also excellent for country twang, blues, and rock-a-billy. Played through a Fender Deluxe Reverb, aFender Champ 12, a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, a Bad Cat, and a portable Yamaha AA5, the guitar produced a superb range of sounds, from clean to dirty (think Gretsch 6120). The hollow body does produce feedback though, so you'll need to fill the f-holes or make some other accommodation for live performance.
Support:
I've had no problems, and don't expect any, so I am unable to answer this question. I do expect that Ibanez will fully back this great product.
Overall:
This one's a keeper. I expect to keep it as long as I live. I chose it because it was better-made and better-sounding, than any other guitar of this style in this price range and beyond.
Of course, I'm always searching for other guitars; one guitar (or ten) is never enough. If it were stolen, I would definitely replace it with the same model--something I would not say about many guitars.
