"The Mic Pre You Will Take with You...When It's Important"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
I have been around a lot of expensive and inexpensive compressors, and hands-down, this is absolutely my favourite. (I must say both of mine were made in the UK; I have spoken to the people at Joe Meek, however, and they assure me that the new models made in China are a step up in their specialities and follow stricktly the blueprints of the original.) The sound is warm and pristine.
Feature:
Adore the headroom and the clarity it give mics. The resonance quality is superb.
Ease of Use:
It is so easy to find "your sound" or the "song's sound". Anyone who records, engineers and producers ("home-" or the "Big Studios"), knows that every intrument, from acoustic guitars, vocals, amps, etc. This mic pre has yet to disappoint. I take it to other studios for my vocals and amps, in particular. Regardless the mics in use, I have not found anything short of $2000 mic pres that compare. Call me eccentric...I do trust my ears, though, and my recordings are very important to me. We all feel that way, right?
Quality:
As I said, mine are made in the UK, so I should not comment here; however, the PMI/Joe Meek people are real craftsmen...
Manufacturer Support:
No problems ever. They even gave me some very useful hints for added colour and getting the most out of this fabulous piece of kit.
Value:
Absolutely worth the cost.
The Wow Factor:
"Sex appeal?" Well, they look great in my rack, but I wouldn't say I am attracted to it in an abnormal way... Had I not been thrilled with it, I would not have taken all this time to review it.
Overall:
I will be satisfied with the Joe Meek mic channel until I or it break down! Sure The Liquid Channel, the 1960s and 1969s, Manley et.al. are great, but so are their price tags, and with all the digitalism in our studios, we still need this kind of warmth. It does not darken or dull one's tracks, unless that is one's desired effect, it warms the sometimes harsh exactness of digital dithers.
