"Why? Whyyyyyyy? I thought Korg were on top of their game..."
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Feature:
Features are decent. Korg finally took out the hard drive and the CD burner. You can still add them as options though. But not having them included reduces the price a lot.
The tube... it's a joke. The blue light behind it... come on Korg. The whole thing is done through a solid state circuit. And like it or not, it sounds solid state too. No warm-up for the tube? Yeah right.
Quality:
Man... Korg has cut some serious corners on this one. And it's still pretty damn pricey. It is not as well-built as the Triton series. If you compare the quality with the Motif ES8 you'll know what I'm talking about. Plastic shell for a "road hugging" 'board? No way. The piano action is disappointing.
Value:
For $2900, do yourself a favor and get the Motif ES8. It's got better sounds. It's made a lot better, and it has the closest feel to a real piano (I guess because Yamaha specializes in pianos too). If you can go to a store and compare them and listen to them through the same setup, making the final decision shouldn't be easy.
Desirability:
I'm not sure if I'd be willing to pay almost three grand for this. I would definitely get the ES8 over the Extreme. That's without even considering the Extreme 88 for a second. Plus I don't want a fake tube on my board. A fake tube that lights blue and is so bright you go 'damn... what kind of a tube is it?'
Sound:
The sounds on the Extreme aren't bad at all. After all you'd expect to get decent sounds from a high-end Korg, right? But here's the deal... they're not as good as Korg claims they are. The Motif ES smokes the Extreme without question. Even the classic Motif sounds better.
Overall:
I think the folks at Korg haven't done their homework. It seems they wanted to come up with something to release and cash in on. The physical quality of this board is nothing close to the Tritons. Nothing even remotely close to the high-end Yamahas. It's worth trying though, 'coz it's fun. If you absolutely have to try it at home to dig in deeper (which is always a good choice as any review is biased to a certain extent) make sure you can RETURN it. And make sure you ask the return policy on it. Some dealers won't take it back because it comes with software. So due to "copyright" restrictions they won't take it back.
