"Fantastic Monitors for the $$$!"

Sound:
I bought a pair (new) about 6 months ago and one thing I really like about the R8 is there accuracy. How you mix on these is what you'll hear in the club. They fall a liitle flat when you drive them at high volume levels for long periods, but it is quite minor. You can't expect a $400 pair of nearfields to sound like a $4000 pair of Genelecs. Best value for the $$ no doubt.

"Next best thing to Mackie HR824s, and at less than half the cost."

Feature:
The fewer tricks, the better, in a monitor. These have no bass adjustment, and that's good: match them to your room by buying whichever model is tuned for your space. RP5s for little rooms, RP6s for average (project studio) rooms, and the RP8s for bigger rooms (my DAW workroom is 13 feet by 23 feet, & RP8s are fine, but might be too boomy in a room half the size. The woofer, by the way, is NOT an 8-incher: it's 7 inches according to my ruler, but not to worry, my frequency sweeps show they do get down to 45Hz - they sound like 8 inches, and with the HF-level knob set flat, they're as flat as they can be.

Quality:
The cabinets are finished much better than similarly priced monitors coming out of other Chinese factories. From the evidence of the stickers, mine went through two separate rounds of quality control. I've got the gain set at 9 o'clock, maybe -15 dB, so the amps aren't being pushed at all. If I had to fault anything, it would be the woofers' break-up mode - when presented with really challenging, torture-test material, there's some minor transient cone break-up, but I've heard speakers costing twice as much emit death rattles when confronted with the same source material. At reasonable levels, with reasonable signals, they sound fine to me. One of the smaller (lighter) Rokits would be a better choice for a portable monitor.

Value:
They're well worth the asking price. It makes no sense to pay less and get a lesser monitor, when these are so capable for the money.

Desirability:
Nice cabinet, nice integrated waveguide, however a tacky juvenile non-pro logo offsets the coolth of the B&W-looking yellow woofers - eventually I'll spray paint the logo satin/matte black.

Sound:
They're well suited as mix monitors for the kinds of music I make (trip-hop, nu RnB). I wouldn't choose them as recording monitors for string quartet or acoustic folk, but they have the dynamic range, high-end resolution, and bottom-end punch to let me make mixes that translate well to other systems. These are fast, muscular monitors, and the best I've encountered in their price range.

Support:
No need for support so far (knock on wood).

Overall:
The next step up, as far as I'm concerned, would be the Mackie HR824s, for $750 more. I wouldn't bother trading up to the Mackie HR624s - I think I'd get a better return, in terms of sound quality, by spending my $400 on a good digital-analog interface to get a cleaner signal into my KRK RP8s, and upgrading my reverb software to Sonic Flavours' R66.

Feature:
What is there to say? They're simple studio monitors. Three inputs: XLR, 1/4", and RCA.

Quality:
It's made in China, but that doesn't detract from the worksmanship at all.

Value:
These compare well with other brands such as Mackie, and sell for less than half the price. I got mine at Guitar Center for $185 a piece!

Desirability:
They look cool. The yellow speakers are quite unique.

Sound:
The clarity is amazing. It's retained as you get louder too, so these make for some good multipurpose speakers. I use them with a Korg Triton LE.

Support:
Documentation could have been better.

Overall:
These speakers are great. They were relatively inexpensive and have met my needs 100%
