"X3L good for practicing"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
The X3L sounds digital. The emulations are OK, but they are not the same as using analog or tube gear.
I've owned it for 2.5 years. I keep up with the firmware updates from Line 6.
The X3L does not help me achieve the sound I'm looking to get. I use a Mesa Boogie tube pre, and a pedal board full of pedals to get the tone I'm looking for.
I used it: direct into PA for shows direct in for recording, in combination with tube amps and Marshall cabs both live and recording. I really put the unit through it's paces over the last 30 months.
To make this product sound better, expect to tweak a lot to find a useful/musical sound!
Feature:
Useful: many input and output jacks
I have put dynamic mics, bass, mp3 players and guitars into it...
You can have 2 guitars, a mic and an mp3 player going thru the X3L at one time!!!
It offers Powerful and flexible preset programming.
Non-useful:
The digital out spdif out worked ONCE for me.
I bought the required $15 digital cable. After a few attempts to record spdif, I gave up.
Phantom power for mic input would be nice.
Ease of Use:
It's NOT easy to get great sounds out of this unit. There is a significant learning curve... And I owned the POD 2.0 for over 10 years!!!
Quality:
It is a computer in a flimsy plastic shell with some of the most used and important knobs - - made out of plastic.
I worry something will break.
For the most part, it is road worthy. I've traveled & played shows with it MANY times.
I have an issue with the save button. It took me hours on the forums to find it is a common issue... Line 6 doesn't fix it. you need to put a piece of paper around one of the switches!
Manufacturer Support:
You better LOVE reading LOT's of forum posts if you have an issue with the unit. Line 6's idea of customer service is: "Go look up the answer for yourself!!!"
Value:
For me, this was a unit I quickly outgrew in the musical sense. Although the X3L has a million features, in the end:
it doesn't compare to REAL guitar gear.
For the price, you do get flexibility and lots of tone-toys.
The Wow Factor:
The X3 Live is a practical piece for me to keep around for practicing. And, sometimes for recording late at night... but, I'll re-amp the sound the next day for a better tone!
Overall:
Days after I got the unit, I was trying all sorts of things to make it sound better... running thru tube amps and such. After 30 months of intense tweaking, I cannot say I've ever been satified with the unit.
Now, My Analogman modified Boss SD-1 pedal... was perfect from the moment I plugged into it.
