"Great Sound & Design - Lousy Manufacturing & Inconsistent Build Quality !"

    Feature:
Features are well designed. Comes with standard accessoreies (A/C cord & manual)

    Quality:
I purchased my pair of MR8's at a different online retailer. I've had two separate problems. The first was a hum/buzz coming from the built in amplifiers which could be heard from the back of the unit. I exchanged that monitor and received another that has a rattling sound when playing bass patches or samples. Only 1 out of 3 of the monitors has no problems, but that's not good enough odds for me. I think that Mackie designed these very well BUT their manufacturer in China is not doing a good job with quality control. These only come with a 1-year warranty and then Mackie tries to upsell you an extended warranty when you register. Unfortunately I'm returning my pair of MR8's and am probably going to purchase some KRK Generation 2 Rockit 8's instead which come with a 3-year parts & labor warranty. The KRK's also sound very good.

    Value:
It would be a good price if they were manufactured with more consistent quality.

    Desirability:
Well, I wanted them enough to initially purchase them, but now I'm sorry due to the problems I've had with 2 of the 3 monitors I've had.

    Sound:
The sound quality is excellent for this price range.

    Ease of Use:
Very easy to setup and adjust to your environment.

    Support:
Mackie was helpful via phone for my first monitor problem. When I used their online support for the 2nd monitor problem I never received a reply regarding the internal rattling sound.

    Overall:
I'm sending mine back for a refund on Monday due to the problems I've experienced and already mentioned.

"This review is biased towards one aspect of the MR8 I found to be a deal breaker. The other aspects of the MR8 are not a concer"

I am here to state a biased point against these speakers. I ordered them on November 12th, 2008 and got them on the 13th. I was pretty excited, but -- within 15 minutes I knew I could not keep these. My studio is a studio -- not a fish tank. I value peace and quiet. The power supply on this thing will kill your studio's serentiy. Both monitors had a noticeable hum from as far as 10 feet away. F***. Mackie has sold me a lemon. I had HR624s for a few years. Fantastic speakers. Sold them due to financial constraints. Wound up buying the worst monitors of ALL TIME -- the original M-Audio BX8A. After that, I tried the Rokit RP8G2. I would have kept those, had the tweeters not already been blown when I received them. The replacements had distorted, blown tweeters too. I figured two chances was enough for Rokit. Time to move on. So, despite reading the review STATING this problem (noisy power supply) right here on Samedaymusic, I let my faith in Mackie's good name come before the anecdote of a stranger. Whoops. I'm not saying never again -- perhaps the HR824 mk2 doesn't have this problem... But, this is truly a mind bender for me. I have no idea how or why Mackie could build these things with such terrible power supplies. I admit -- I am extremely biased towards noise coming from electronics, and have returned LCDs for this very reason. Some people will say -- just turn them off when you're not using them -- No. Use quality parts and you can have my $500. Don't use quality parts and it'll go to somebody else. Why Mackie would try to slip this past dudes who typically spend most of their time LISTENING is beyond me.

Don't buy these if you have sensitive hearing. If you're serious about having a quiet studio to be in -- these speakers will annoy you.
