Sound:

FIRST OFF, THIS WILL NOT - NOT NOT NOT - RUN ON WINDOWS XP PRO SP1 AND ALL SUBSEQUENT INFO TYPED IN THIS REVIEW IS FOR 32 BIT WINDOWS XP. I use VERY powerful PC's that use DUAL CORE 2.8 GHz CPU's with 4 GB of RAM across 2 Terrabytes of HD space in a Studio. I build PC's and do Home Studio based work with several years of experience. Cubase 4 is the platform which this VST was used on. ADDITIONALLY, I have used Native Instruments B4 on my systems and own ImpOscar, N.I. Elektric Keys, Edirol HQ Orchestral, EMU Proteus X2, Halion, etc, etc. ALL MY VSTS WORK FLAWLESSLY - MOTU on the other hand, very bumpy and will not begin to function on XP x64. Please read this review with some merit behind what I am about to say. Overall mixed feelings on the sound quality for some instruments loaded - samples stutter or crackle at the start of a note while playing or during playback within Cubase (the MK I and Japanese C Piano) What does work sounds good (MK II - V, and the B4 is to die for)

Great features, they just don't all work - the FX parameters hang up at times and some don't work at all.

Very intuitive

Quality:

GUI freezes while trying to load an instrument - gives a feeling as though I am going to have a memory or CPU crash. VST meters which show CPU load in Cubase spike heavily and load very slow. In addition, I turned off all other FX to use this and it was still buggy. Sound Quality is hit and miss. Some parameters will not function properly.

Manufacturer Support:

I spoke to a very nice tech rep, but MOTU just refused to come up with answers on the XP Pro x64 issues. I never received a call back from a rep or supervisor on this issue. It was as though they were turning their heads to the situation. Additionally, there were no explanations for its poor performance on 32 bit platforms.

Value:

HOW CAN YOU PLACE ANY - ANY VALUE ON $280 OF SOFTWARE THAT ALMOST FLAT OUT DOES NOT WORK. THEIR IS NOOOOOOOOOOO VALUE.

I just cannot justify owning software advertised to work on XP PRO x64 and it will not even install. Additionally, when I did get this running on my second computer that runs XP PRO x86 (32-bit)which is NOT the PC I use for running VST instruments since memory use is limited to 3GB, it sounded horrible in some instances. Example, there was crackling that can be heard from the samples playback during the use of the MK I and Japanese C Piano. Also, some features/parameters of FX did not function at all. GUI freezes and CPU spikes occur. BOTTOM LINE, MOTU SHOULD PULL THIS OFF THE SHELF FOR PC'S AND STAY OUT OF THE PC MARKET, OR THEY SHOULD FIX THIS AND STOP USING PC CONSUMERS AS LAB RATS TO SEE IF THIS SOFTWARE WILL WORK ON A PC. There is NOTHING they can say that would convince me that their engineers and R&D team spent the necessary time testing this product to ensure it would function properly BEFORE releasing it to the PC consumer. PC users - STAY AWAY FROM MOTU!!!
