"At this price and weight, take two!!"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
We are using two of these amps, one in stereo for our main front of house mix, one split between the woofers and the monitor mix. The sound is clean and transparent. The low range stuff really punches out of the woofers. We have never sounded better!
The amp has the normal indicator lights, of course. Each channel is independently switchable for high pass, low pass of full range operation. The only niggle here is that the cross-over frequency is fixed at 100 Hz and cannot be adjusted. For a lot of folks, this will not matter much. Combo output connectors (speakon and 1/4") make connecting speakers quick and easy. The only reason I gave this less than a "10" is that each channel only has one output connector. We had to build a slitter box in order to connect two woofers to the same channel, but at this price point I consider that a minor flaw indeed. The amp also has a fan in it to keep it cool and that fan is whisper quiet. Best of all, these things are LIGHT. 800 Watts x 2 at only 7 pounds! Our DSP unit weighs more, and our PA rack can now be managed over short distances by one guy!
Ease of Use:
We had a gig the day after the amps came back to us. The bass player and I met at the hall where we were playing, removed the two old amps and placed the two Peaveys' into the rack. We connected the inputs, connected the speakers, set the switches and we were cooking. We played with the levels for 10 - 15 minutes and we were done. It doesn't get too much easier than that.
Great sound and the amp appears to be very well made. We were playing a poker run fro a vets motorcycle club and the organizer used our PA all day long for announcements, raffles, auctions and canned music before we started playing. Both amps were running for about eight straight hours without even getting noticeably warm.
Wish I could score this a 12. Here's the story.
When we first got the amps, we hooked them up and found that while either amp worked great all by itself, whenever we powered the two of them up together, one of them would cut out and go mute. We spent about 9 hours over two days screwing around with them, and it was driving us crazy. Sunday night, the bass player posted on an internet forum, describing our problems and looking for (ANY) advice. The next day, when he called Peavey, he learned that their engineers had seen his post and were just about to send him an email. Instead, they gave him a shipping account number and had him send the amps directly back to Peavey (even though we had bought them here as SDM). They were returned in perfect order ten days later. It seems that they needed a simple component change because our AC source didn't have enough noise in it. Peavey went out of its way to get these amps fixed and back to us qucikly. I cannot say enough good things about them!!
Let's see ... $0.19 per watt, 7 pounds and great sound. What's not to love about this amp? Bi-amping, is now within the budget of nearly any band. Great customer support and easy to get a fantastic sound for the band.
The Wow Factor:
The amp is really cool looking with a green power indicator and blue signal indicators all in a sleek-looking case.
We replaced a great sounding but 25 year old Yamaha amp and a Soundtech power amp with two of these Peaveys. No one in the band has any reservations out this decision.
