"Great Tool for Home Studios"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
The features of this product are the basic features you need to control 75% - 80% of the functions done during a mix down session. Operating this device with your left hand and your mouse with your right gives you a huge boost in the speed of your workflow once you get proficient at doing your mixes this way, and the precision you get over the functions this unit controls is much greater than if you did it with the mouse.
Ease of Use:
Using this product is easy, just like using a mixing board, but the nice thing is once you get used to using it you can really get things done much faster, easier, and with more precision in your mixes.
This product, like every product I have ever used that Presonus makes, is built tough. The motorized fader has a solid, smooth, and quiet operation. It can also be set to be touch sensitive. The push buttons are solid and illuminated which makes it easy to see the status of a selected channel.
While I have heard great things about Presonus support, I have never had to use it for any of their products I have owned. I cannot give any company a better endorsement than that.
All of the features, the solid construction, and the multiple ways this unit can help make my recording and mixing sessions better and easier make it well worth the $130 I spent. Add to that the same day free shipping deal from Same Day Music and you can see this purchase was an easy choice to make.
The Wow Factor:
I'm not really big on the "wow" factor. I am more of a "function over fashion" kind of guy. I want my gear to look decent, but i am more interested in it working very well, and doing what i need it to do. This unit gives me both. It looks very good sitting on my little table next to my laptop and it really helps me get the job done fast and right. The only way you get a better unit than this is to spend the big dollars on a full sized controler. Doing that will cost you at least $1000 for a good one, and you will need lots of space for it. For guys like me who do not have either of those, the Faderport from Presonus is a homerun.
Very simply put, this little unit is great for giving you some hands on "feel" in your mix down sessions. While it is not as good as mixing on a full console, it gives you the feel of mixing on a console without the cost. It also fits easily onto a small table if you are using a laptop to run your DAW like I do. I am using Studio One Ver. 2.0 and hookup into that program was 2 or 3 mouse clicks, but the instructions to connect this unit to other DAWs looked very easy. There is also one other very useful application of this unit that led me to purchase it. By using a long USB cable, (16 feet), I am able to remotely start recording, stop recording, erase a take, and reset the recording session back to the starting point. This allows me to do this from behind the drum kit. I no longer have to relocate my laptop and recording interface to record drum sessions. This is wonderful for doing multiple takes in a recording session as i can get into "musician" mode and stay with it until i have recorded the take i want.
