"If you're looking to replace a stage worth of percussion instruments in one reliable, easy to use box then this is the best unit"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Feature:
All the features are great on the unit. You have to buy external pads and triggers to use that feature. There is no sequencer, so I use a Yamaha QY-100 for that. There is no sampler, so I use a Roland SPD-S for that. I makes being both a quality percussion pad and a sound module look easy.
Quality:
Mostly plastic and rubber components. The plastic is fine for stray stick hits, but it needs a case for road transport. The company Beato makes a nylon one. A custom hard case wouldn't hurt either if you have the money.
Value:
If you're looking to replace a stage worth of percussion instruments in one reliable, easy to use box then this is the best unit on the market.
Desirability:
Unless you're using them every day... who wants to own a set of timpani, congos, steel drums, wind chimes, tubular bells, etc. Own this one unit and dial them in when you need them. I wanted it just so I didn't have to rent a storage unit somewhere!
Sound:
The sounds in the SPD-20 are top quality and there are so many of them! I use the SPD-20 for both a compact practice kit and recording at home. I sample sounds from the SPD-20 into my sampler to use during live shows. The sounds are more than adequate.
Support:
Never had a problem with it. The best support is no support needed.
Overall:
It doesn't have a sequencer or a sampler. They have software or hardware versions of both. I decided to get two dedicated hardware units to fill those gaps. If it was lost I would replace it.
