"Roland's V-Piano Stands Alone as the Penultimate Piano - Acoustic or Electronic"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
Sounds quality? There is no equal, even if you were to own a Steinway Model D, or a Boesendorfer. You can do things with this to adjust tone and sound which are impossible with a piano. Quite frankly, any sample-based piano is garbage compared to the expression which carries through the warm and natural-sounding overtones. I actually would prefer this over a real grand piano, because it would be difficult even in the best of circumstances to get as good a sound by using pick-ups or mics on a piano.
Plain and simple, there is no equal, it even had the Yamaha rep salivating!
Feature:
Three pedals, realistic action, and the stand is made for this instrument. Having the channels built into the stand to route and hide cords is a nice touch. There's really nothing bad about this, and with multiple outputs available, you can get the exact sound and timbre you're looking for with ease.
Ease of Use:
Couldn't be simpler, and that's a big thing to say -- knowing historically how it was when I first bought my Roland LAPC-I, PCM module and A-80 keyboard controller about 20 years ago. The design is intuitive, and you even have the interface for your computer, so that creating different sounds can be as easy as looking at graphics of a piano to adjust the hardness of the keys, change the strings of the piano to all silver, adjust the dampers, dynamics, etc. Absolutely impressive, great sound, without having to study anything, and tweaks involve only a couple of very nicely placed controls. Well executed, and so far ahead of the competition, I can honestly say I don't expect anyone to come up with anything remotely close to Roland's V-Piano for at least a few years.
Quality:
The V-Piano feels rock solid, nothing that feels like it's going to get damaged on the road while gigging or doing studio runs. As far as I'm concerned, this is the penultimate piano for any style of playing, more expressive and adaptable than anything ever before. Using proprietary modeling algorithms instead of old-fashioned samples, the quality of honky-tonk and grand pianos are beyond compare. I would put this instrument up against any other example of piano, real, hardware and/or software, and would have a huge problem hearing anything other then exceptional sound, no matter the configuration.
Value:
Okay, it's pricey. However, the quality is unrivaled. If I had the money (and room!) for a Steinway Model D, I would probably still pick the Roland V-Piano. Therefore, in that comparison, the V-Piano value is about a 47. If you try this keyboard, every other manufacturers piano products will seem like mere toys, and the value is a 15 if you are a solo pianist. So I give it a balance 8 for value, because not everyone needs the greatest sounding piano available anywhere -- especially if it's buried in the mix for accompaniment.
The Wow Factor:
This is the first piano I have felt so passionate about since I first purchased my Roland A-80 controller (for the action) in 1989. I have always felt there was something lacking in terms of accurate sound, tone quality, and overtone reproduction from pretty much every sampled piano ever created. Some had pretty good Attack and initial decay, and they fell apart after that -- on sustain, etc. This makes the true expression of the pianist come through brilliantly, making it actually sound better than when played on an acoustic piano. Truly the first piano I felt I "NEED" to get, this goes way beyond "want." Now it's just about justifying the expense!
Overall:
What else can I say? From everything I read and heard prior to actually seeing and playing a Roland V-Piano, left me still somewhat skeptical. However, once I paid my fingers on the natural-feeling artificial ivory keys and heard how it sounded, I was excited. After playing with some of the very unique features and capabilities of the V-Piano, I knew my expectations had definitely been surpassed. After playing it, I went back to competitor's products, and they may as well have been a toy piano at a warehouse store in comparison to feel, sound, features, and overall professional appeal. If you enjoy playing piano, this instrument will enhance your craft immensely.
