Sound:
Dollar for dollar you can't beat the Tascam 2488. You get 24 tracks of either 24 or 16 bit recording and the ability to record up to eight tracks at one time. There are a total of 250 vitual tracks (that means you can record 250 different parts but you have pick 24 tracks for use in the final mix). The sound is stunning. Like the old computer term "GIGO" it's garbage in and garbage out so whatever you put into the 2488 stays true to original source.
Feature:
The only complaint (and it is a minor one for me) is the internal effects. They reverb is a little "dark" sounding and has no EQ control but the digital delays, compressors and many of the other effects are very nice.
If you buy this machine also invest $30.00 in David Will's Tascam 2488 instruational DVD. You will be up and running in a very short amount of time.
Ease of Use:
The best part of the 2488 is the ease of use. I have had both Yamaha and Roland digital workstations and while they they both offered supurb recording quality, they were very difficult to work with and you have to keep the dog earred manual close at hand while recording. The Tascam 2488 lives up to Tascam's long history and reputation of providing user friendly recording gear.
Quality:
I have had my 2488 for 6-7 years with no problems (other than my own operator errors).
Manufacturer Support:
I never needed any Tascam help but my friends at an independent web site tascamforums.com have helped me through many of my own misunderstandings.
Value:
I haven't seen anyone offer nearly the same amount of recording power in one box for anywhere near this price.
The Wow Factor:
I don't even get this catagory. This is a dumb question.
Overall:
I have a long history of recording in both a professional and semi pro level going back to the early 1970's. I have worked as an engineer in two pro studios and have had my own home studio for many years. This is one piece of gear I would buy immediately if my current 2488 died tomorrow.
