"Good Amp That Would Be Great With Adjustable Chorus Effect"
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
I already have a Fishman Loudbox Mini, so, everything in this review is in comparison to the Loudbox Mini. The Vox seems to have a fuller warmer tone to it. I'll take the AGA70 over the Loudbox Mini here.
Feature:
I previously owned a Vox AC15 and liked how I could set a different tone and voicing on each of the channels and, with use of an A/B pedal, quickly switch from one setting to the other. I also like what the existence of the tube seems to do for the tone of the amp. I was hoping, on the AGA70 to get a bit of an overdriven sound on one channel and a sweet, clean acoustic sound on the other. I'm disappointed a bit because it seems way too easy to overdrive the amp on either channel, causing me have to get most of my volume from the Master Volume. So, I'm not as able to get distinct volumes and tones between one channel to the other. On the plus side, I've always loved Vox's chicken head knobs. On this amp they're bone colored and in good contrast--thus easy to see and adjust--with the black finish of the amp itself. I do wish they gave a little more resistance because it's real easy to accidentally move one. MY BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IS WITH THE CHORUS--IT'S EITHER ON OR OFF. You either get "shimmer" or "no shimmer". On the Fishman the chorus can be dialed in and get something subtle. No option for subtle chorus on the Vox. Again, this is my biggest disappointment. Fix it Vox! Please. Again on the plus...and vs the Loudbox Mini...love having a mute switch. Almost forgot the 'Color' knob is a nice feature that adds to the ability to nicely customize the tone. The Loudbox Mini could really use this.
Ease of Use:
Very easy and straightforward to use. The 2 drawbacks to me--the channel volumes overdrive the amp at low settings. The funky chorus is either on or off. Any effect on any amp or gizmo should be adjustable!
Quality:
Seems to be a solid piece--as I've come to expect from Vox products.
Manufacturer Support:
No experience here.
Value:
I believe it is a good, competitive price and value. Implement an adjustable chorus feature and a cover, bring the "new" price down to $360.00 and I'd give it a solid 10.
The Wow Factor:
I've always liked to vintage look of Vox amps.
Overall:
I've been A/B-ing the heck out of it with my Fishman Loudbox Mini and keep coming back to the AGA70 for it's fuller tone. Please make the chorus adjustable! More resistance on the knobs and a midway detente would be appreciated and angle the bottom, rear of it so it points up a bit from the floor. Did I say the chorus effect should be adjustable. I'm going to have to get a stomp box now.
