"Good price, great monitor for the user who likes his / her upper ranges bright."
Feature:Balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs are fairly standard (the 1/4" also accepts unbalanced TS plugs). There's a slew of EQ adjustments on the back which are just awesome. The fact that Yamaha even incorporated a rudimentary room adjustment function on each monitor in this price range is exemplary.
Quality:
Build quality is fantastic. Wouldn't expect anything less from Yamaha. Thanks guys!
Value:
400 bucks for the pair, plus Mo-Pads and stands? You kidding me? 400 dollars for these monitors anyways is a great price, considering their features.
Sound:
I'm not going to sit here and tell you to go out and buy these monitors right this very second because these monitors might not be for you...I recently went to a local music store to demo these (HS50M) monitors to see how I would like them. I have mixed on various different kinds of monitors (some pro-quality like the new breed of Genelecs, to the cheaper KRK series). When I popped in one of my demo cds, I was completely floored. I have been looking for a studio monitor that has a hyped upper-midrange / high end for SOO long, and I was not willing to hunt down a pair of NS-10s and a power amp to go along with them. The HS50Ms are exactly the kind of monitor I had been looking for...I am the kind of engineer who likes my monitors to be extremely bright (which translates into being extremely honest as well), which is exactly why I am not recommending these monitors to everyone. The clarity I perceived from these monitors was nothing short of astounding, especially for being in the 300 - 500 dollar price range. My recommendation for you: go to your nearest audio store and try them out THEN decide. If you have an ear like mine, then you will be very pleased
Ease of Use:
Plug it in, set your monitor levels to +4 (if recording and using balanced audio gear) and give your ears 2-7 days to get used to these monitors, then mix away!
Support:
Have not had to use customer support yet, so I really do not have a rating to give, so I'll just put a 5, since it's middle of the road.
