"Great pedal to improve the sound of your bass and beyond . . ."
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
I thought I was getting good sound out of my set up, but wanted a pedal that would allow for quick "voice" changes without having to change the equalizer settings on the amp, and then remember what they were each time I wanted to change to a different sound. This pedal not only addressed those needs, but added a richness to the sound of my set up that I no longer play without it. You can go anywhere from a warm sound, to an enhanced low end which partially mutes the higher end notes, to a full sound balanced through all notes, to nasty tight brassy sound, tremolo, wah, chorus, etc.
Feature:
As for the sound customization, there really is a wide array of amp modeling that when combined with the driver settings really alters the sound of each voice. As with most pedals, this one comes with 60 patches with a wide array of sounds. You may not like all of the patches, but you'll certainly find patches you'll like and then you can adjust them to your needs. There is even a Smart media card bay to which you can store more patches and rhythm patterns for unlimited storage capability. The rythym machine is a plus for practicing and creating jams. There is also a sampler that I haven't attempted to use as yet, so I can't comment on that.
Ease of Use:
The manual was a lot to read, but this helped me make my decision over lower priced pedals as every bit of the features was well explained. Then you take it from there to customize the preset "patches" (as the voices are referred to) and then store them to user presets. There are 6 banks of 10 patches each. I use this to set up for songs that require voice changes to store the voices in the sequence required by the song so that I can just step through voice changes by pressing one of the pedals to get to the next patch. The 6 character display is definite plus over the 2 digit displays of lower end pedals when it comes to naming and identifying your user presets.
After that you can choose effects, pedal assignments, noise reduction settings, equalizer settings, etc. by using the 3 rotary buttons on the top of the pedal. These 3 buttons also function as quick edit buttons for the major settings for each patch. It takes some getting used to, but this is something you can take on a bit at a time as you get comfortable with each of the functions. The display shows you what setting you are in as you step through the components of each patch so that you don't have to cross reference the manual. My only complaint here is that the noise reduction did not always cut out the hiss for all voices although I found that this was generally not very noticeable when playing with other instruments as the hiss is only heard when you hit a note and that was only heard on a small number of voices. You can use the EQ settings for the voice to reduce that hiss for those patches that may have this issue, but that doesn't quite eliminate it completely. I haven't been able to get the slap sound I was looking for, but that may be me not working through all of the settings of that patch or my amp EQ settings. Otherwise, I'm really happy with the types of voices I'm getting. I have 15 patches set at this point and keep working and playing with the other presets to build "my library" of sounds, but that is 14 more voice options than before I got the pedal!
The rhythm portion of this pedal provides a wide variety of patterns which is a plus, but not why I chose this pedal. The patterns are crisp and clear, but you have to be careful to protect yourself and your equipment as the initial volume at the start of a pattern is always fairly high and it doesn't seem that you can adjust the volume until after the rhythm starts playing. It would have been a nice feature to have a start/stop pedal or a way of progressing to another pattern without having the bend down and doing it by hand (rhythm control buttons are small and accessible only by hand).
Quality:
As for construction, although it has a plastic body, the controls all feel solid and work flawlessly. There is not a lot of travel in the pedal, but here too you can change the settings to how you want the pedal to work.
Manufacturer Support:
Since I've haven't had to contact them for any type of support, that is the best you can expect for a product.
Value:
I think I got more than my money's worth with this pedal.
Overall:
I highly recommend this pedal and would definitely buy it again. I don't think I will be having any quality issues with it, and with all of the features, I'll be experimenting with this product for quite some time. The quality and variety of the patches has really improved my sound and playing enjoyment, even when playing through a mixer as my bass is no longer "muddy". That's important as I play by ear and man, what a difference that makes.
