"This is not a toy! But it's affordable fun and serious where it counts."
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Feature:
Great value. Zoom put the emphasis on the sounds so it's not loaded with other features but for under $100 what more could you want? Omission of an on/off switch is strange. If you're using battery power, the only way to turn off the unit is to unplug the patch cable! If you're using AC power, I think you have to physically unplug it. I've only had it a few days so maybe there's an auto-off feature I haven't found yet?
Quality:
Quality seems fine, but the unit feels light weight and plasticy so I wouldn't want to drop it! I also own the Zoom A2 acoustic effects unit, and that feels much more solid to me than this one. But that's a different class product so it's not fair to compare.
Value:
I bought this because I landed a gig playing guitar in a pit band for a musical. I needed cheap and easy access to a full pallet of different electric guitar sounds. This was the perfect product for me. The pedal lets me quickly maintain the volume or control effects parameters or amp gain, which is important in a live environment. For $79, I have trouble believing all this product can do. Yes, I wish it were a little heavier, had a more readable display, a little larger footprint, etc. But Zoom needed this product to be inexpensive. They put the value where it counted most.
Desirability:
Not a whole lot of sex appeal. It's small and grey! Now the A2 acoustic effects unit with its chrome sides and glittery green shell, that's kinda sexy. This one not so much. But I still love this little unit. People are amazed at what it can do. I brag about how little I paid for it.
Sound:
Sound is good. Very versatile. I haven't used it at high volume, but I haven't been able to hear any hiss on any of the patches. Very clean. I found that many of the stock sounds have way too much reverb to be practical in performance. I wish they would have included a few more clean sound samples, although I realize many players want nothin' but distortion.
Ease of Use:
I'm glad Zoom included a wallet card to help decipher the codes! It's not easy sometimes to figure out what effect you have dialed up. But you get used to it after a few days. The pedal is functional but range is very limited. I guess I expected there to be more range of motion. It's a little tricky. As far as configuring a patch, Zoom made it pretty easy to quickly get at the most useful features. Very intuitive interface. But then again, I work as a computer programmer so technology doesn't intimidate me much. Finally, I wear size 9 shoes so it's not like my feet are huge, but I found the buttons and pedal to be too close together. It's VERY easy to hit the pedal by mistake when advancing patches, which means you could cut your volume to zero while changing a patch! Not cool if you were trying to click over to a patch for your wailing solo...
Support:
I haven't had to deal with anyone at Zoom personally, but their website is great and includes answers to most questions you would have. As an aside, you can tell from reading their website that some things were translated from Japanese a little less than perfect.
Overall:
It's the perfect product for me. I'm a serious amateur so just wanted something to make me sound professional without spending a lot of money. Gives me access to lots of different sounds. Maybe I can't play like Van Halen or Santana, but now I can at least sound like them... Just having a lot of fun exploring what the unit can do.
