"Best "bang for the buck""
This reviewer purchased this item from Same Day Music.
Sound:
I've had this unit for about two months and so far its performance has exceeded my expectations. Some of the on board drum patterns however, lack punch. The drum sequencer is a good tool for laying down ideas, but for a polished CD, you'd do better to find a real drummer or use one of the better sounding Boss or Alesis units. Still, the over all sound is excellent.
Feature:
Feature for feature the 1608 does pretty much what the Boss 1600CD does for alot less green; I.E., on board drum/bass sequencer, pitch shift, harmony generator, sampler. Plus, the Zoom has a dedicated mixdown track. The Boss does not(read the manual).
Ease of Use:
The MRS-1608 Manual is written very well and easy to understand. It takes you step by step through every operation. There are buttons on the console that take you directly to the main menues, so you don't have to scroll through menue after menue to get where your going. The drum/bass sequencer is very tedious and time consuming to program when used to record, but it's useful for practice or just jammin'.
Quality:
The unit seems to be made well. The chassis is metal not plastic. As for taking it on the road, my traveling days as a musician are well behind me. But I would suggest to you younger cats, consider investing in a cheeper unit if this is your purpose.
Manufacturer Support:
N/A - No experience with tech support.
Value:
The MRS-1608 is, in my opinion, the best "bang for the buck" in this price range. Considering what it does, no other 16 track comes close for the money.
Overall:
I expect to be using this product for a while, but there is one concept you must embrace before puchasing this or any other digital recorder. These machines are basically computers specifically designed to record and reproduce audio signals. And being computers, they are subject to the same laws of physics as every other computer. So don't expect them to perform flawlessly 100% of the time. It ain't gonna happen. Be prepared for the occasional lock up, freeze up and system crash. It is a simple fact of life. Back up your projects faithfully and often. It will save you alot of grief in the long run.
